Prophecies (the original campaign) is a great time all by itself in PvE.

If you Choose a Game Take this into consideration....
Nightfall: Allows You To Command Up To 4 Heroes, which will be Very Useful in the Other 2 Chapters.
Prophecies: Gives You the 6 Core Profession, and Alot of Skills to play with
Factions: Has A lot of Places to Powerlevel - Most Missions are Worth 3,000 Exp. This Game Also has alot of skills to play with aswell

My Opinion: Get Nightfall First, and level all your heroes to 20. Then Get Either Factions or Prophecies. By Having lvl 20 heroes that are fully customized, It'll be REALLY Easy to complete either Prophecies or Factions.

I recommend NF first if you like PVE

Prophecies is decent for skills and lots of different landscapes, but most the game is orientated towards under 20

Also,
If you get NF or Factions - each have 8 professions

Prophecies has only 6

First of all, you can only have 3 heroes that you control at one time.
I doubt he'll be able to access decent skills on his heroes given the NF skills and just core skills(some are decent but still you can't get something like Heal other in NF)
Prophecies is probably the best one to go with having the most diverse land compared to the other two campaigns and giving you a longer story line that you don't have to grind to go though, only problem is you have to wait along time to get max armor. IMO this campaign offers the best skills.
Nightfall does have the heroes but they can be rather annoying to set up and they can be buggy with the skill sets you give them sometimes(Steady Stance/ Drunken Blow anyone?). They removed the grind to get rank 7 Sunspear for foreign characters but it still takes a longer time to get to mission from mission as you have to complete quests to even want to start them.
Factions does have alliance battles though(!Kurzicks! vs Luxons) and "mini" other parts of PvP combat like Fort Aspenwood and the Jade Quarry but during the campaign you are required to get 10,000 of one of the sides in order to continue on though the game which isn't that hard, if you don't like doing PvP much you can do quests to get faction for either side. I think the intro to Factions is also one of the better ones which shows you most of the basics of playing the game.

I'd say beat Prophecies with two or so characters then go on to Factions and once you have decent skills unlocked go to Nightfall and put them on your heroes, but if you are going to buy both Nightfall and Prophecies, go to Lions Arch and get Olais then go to Nightfall and get Koss, Melonai, and Dunkoro and take them to Prophecies and beat the game with those heroes but Melonai won't come in use much unless you unlock some Dervish skills.
Just my two cents=o

I'd recommend Prophecies first if nothing else for the questable skill unlocks. The slower pace of levelling isn't bad the first time through, and he can always bump over to Elona and get a good chuck of his heros when he hits Lion's Arch.

I have all three chapters. I still play Prophecies the most. The Prophecies community is alive and well. If you are planning on getting them all...I'd start with the original.

The answer is.

YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES.

Factions and Nightfall pail in comparison to Prophercies!!!!

Now the reason why....
  • More then 20 missions, I think around 24 or 25.
  • Great story (a bit patchy, but good).
  • Far better character development (it takes 3/4 of the game to reach lvl20, reach max weapons and max armor).
  • You have to undergo challenges to change your secondary profession and its free once you do.
  • It feels rewarding to reach lvl20 and ascend.
  • A far great and larger map to explore.
  • A decent progression in creature lvl to fight.
  • A diverse environment ranging from countryside, desolation, snow, forest, jungle, desert to lava etc.
  • Missions which are far more intelligent then just hacking and slashing. Puzzles to solve.
  • Diverse armor which is different between each class of profession (i.e. fire elementals have different armor to water elementals and so on).

It may take longer to do and you may have to work for your lvl and your armor and your weapons and your secondaries, but its satisfying.

You'l def find less people compared to the new campaigns I expect. But factions is suffering worst out of both from that.

But if you want to earn any respect from long-term players who have been around for 2 years, then you need to take a new char all through Prophercies or people wont accept you for being a true lvl20.

Or I wouldnt :P

You can manege to play PvP owning only one campaign, I did that for a month. I don't say i was unbeatable but still. Of course you don't have acces to AB unless you own faction(wich is, along with the skills and 2 other prof, the only reason ppl still buy it).

Prophecies ftw
People who suggest to start with Nightfall has never been to pre-searing. I know many people who have actually never left it It's an amazing place.
I played through Factions and Nightfall and then I run some guy from LA to Ascalon. I really forgot how huge Tyria is. If you just run from Ascalon to ToA, then down to desert, and then from Droknar thought missions to Ring of Fire... oops you just missed around 70 percent of the map if not 80.
More then a year ago I started with my monk, went all the way throught all missions, bought all armors on the way, even got collector's armor in Cristal Desert before I finally arrived to Droknar to discover even better armor. That was fun. There were lots of people, not like now in Nightfall or Factions. You could actually find people of the same level doing some secondary quests. But new campaigns are all around getting to level 20 as quickly as possible and then... well, nothing really, no sense of progression, no sense of achievement, get armor, buy greens and go play PvP.

Prophecies is SLOW in levelling. If you want a quick path get factions. You can hit level 20 in a few days.

I think you should get Prophecies. Of course I am probably biased as I started in there (the other games not being out then) but if you love a traditional fantasy setting then go for it. I also think it serves a good introduction to GW in general.

And, of course, if you don't get it you will miss out on lovely pre searing. Ahhhhhhhhhh.

I also think there is a satisfaction to be gained for a PvE player from playing the game through in a linear fashion.

Or rather more like a few hours -_- Factions is extremely fast including that the missions are time based for the bonuses. The ONLY slow down in Factions is the fedex quests and gaining 10k faction before advancing at one point or another. I and many/most other people find Factions to be overly difficult at times since it really does rush you in your learning process. You can litterally finish Factions in 2-3days or less.

NightFall has a slower learning curb but is faster than Prophecies... Overall though most people will suggest Nightfall or Prophecies for the PVE oriented player. Factions is geared more towards PvP. However if you are TOTALLY geared toward PvP you will want to get Prophecies since most builds are still centered around most of the core skills. But hardcore PvP grouping will require getting all the chapters. However I think GW is supposed to be coming out with a PvP only one (dunno where that stands if it still does).
There is a guide in the works to help people decide on which chapter to pick up, but it is awaiting approval by the mods. -_-
I recommend Prophecies for its complete map diversity and sheer staying power as it keeps most people coming back. Nightfall falls in second and in my opinion (which is my own and no one elses) I wish I had never gotten Factions -_-

Really? :x *feels silly* Thanks for the correction.

Well, I'd still take Prophecies. Pre-searing ftw, hehe.

I'd have to agree (for the PvE experience). I like the prophesies campaign the most out off all of them. Good story line. NPC's you liked and hated, betrayals and deaths and finally the victorious last mission. So much more satisfying then the other finals. Plus as the quoted said, it takes longer to 20 then in NF (won't even mention factions) I remember looking forward to ever finished quest and mission hoping for that level up so I could spend those precious 10 points. Much more of a PvE feel then the other two, even NightFall. That's part of the joy of PvE, character development. You just don't get the same feel from the other 2.
